Booking a visit ..

The garden is now closed for 2025. As yet we have not decided on our opening times for 2026. These times will be published here in due course and most probably in the November issue of our Newsletter, to which you can subscribe by emailing us on garden@nantybedd.com. We have taken a break from the RHS Partner Garden scheme and so there will be no free entry to RHS members in 2026. We will however continue to offer a 2-for-1 entry to Garden Organic members in our continuing role as one of their Growing Partners.

Booking will continue to be essential at all times and is only via the button below.

Garden tours with Sue. A trip round Nant- y -Bedd is a fantastic experience in itself, but a tour round with garden creator Sue brings an added dimension. Hear all about how the garden came into being and how it has evolved over the 40+ years of Sue’s stewardship.  These tours last about two hours.  Numbers are limited to eight. Garden Organic discounts do not apply to these tours. Details of which days for 2026 will be published here in due course.

The great scourge of modern life – the mobile phone signal – has now reached us for some networks. We would be most grateful if you could refrain from using your phone, except for photographs while you are in the garden.

If you or anyone in your party has any mobility issues please do look at the independent audit by See Around Britain. If you are still unsure please give us a call.

Unfortunately we cannot allow dogs – even very well-behaved ones, much as we love them – as our livestock may be put at risk. Guide dogs are, of course, allowed.

We like to treat all of our visitors as friends – indeed many return time and again. Sue or I (yes, it really is just the two of us) will meet you at the gate and explain the daily nuances of the garden, explain the background to why we are here and be around to answer your questions and understand your own gardening interests. In the meantime, you might find these answers, to the most frequently asked questions, informative

To enhance your visit, we make sure that we do not use any noisy tools – mowers, strimmers etc. – whilst you are here, so we may occasionally turn down a request to visit so that some work can be done!

Please let us know in advance if you have booked but for some reason are unable to get here.

Opening days and times …

Garden openings for 2026 will be published later in 2025.  Park alongside the black-roofed shed and enter via the double gates into the yard.

If you want to arrange a group visit, there are more details and a pre-booking form here and we will try to accommodate you. No minimum number.  

We hope local foraging expert Liz Knight will again be running a series of foraging days here. See her website for details. We also plan to have workshops on Polyculture and Creative Writing with Alys Fowler.   Sue will also running workshop days on Wild Gardening and her favourite subject of Compost Making.

Entrance fee …

£.8.50 per adult, children under 16 free.  Guided tours with Sue are £15.

The entrance fee goes towards to maintaining and improving the garden, which we have now set up with its own aims and objectives (and bank account).

The aims are:

to foster an understanding of organic and sustainable gardening and lifestyle by opening Nant-y-Bedd Garden to members of the public and through talks and courses which further this aim. 

How to find us …

We are approximately equidistant from Abergavenny and Crickhowell, in the Eastern Brecon Beacons National Park – known as the Black Mountains

Refreshments …

Self-service tea will be available on most days.  For group visits please discuss with us in advance.

Visitors are welcome to bring a picnic to eat by the river or by the pond.

Accessibility …

The garden room and potager only are the only parts of the garden suitable for visitors with limited mobility due to terrain and topography.   Unfortunately it is also not really suitable for wheelchair access due to narrow and/or uneven paths.  The website https://seearoundbritain.com has an extensive number of photos of aspects of the garden, such as gates, bridges steps and slopes, which could impact on a visit.

Other …

The natural swimming pond is not available for use by visitors, only for family and friends by invitation.

Plants (mostly home grown) will usually be available for sale as will home-made garden accessories (plant supports, benches etc.). For more details have a look at the posts under Garden Accessories in the menu bar.

Gardening clubs may also wish to discuss our availability for giving illustrated talks.

Finally

Is it Nant y Bedd, Nant-y-Bedd or Nantybedd?  Well that all depends on which source you are looking at.  According to any online address finder (basically the Post Office post code checker) and Ordnance Survey it is Nantybedd.  However the stream which gives the house it’s name is shown on OS as Nant y Bedd and the source of the stream as Blaen Nant-y-Bedd!  So basically ‘you pays your money and takes your choice!’  We tend to use either Nant-y-Bedd or Nant y Bedd, and for simplicity for web and email addresses – nantybedd.
